Xx Week and Pirate Week

Welcome to an eXciting Xx week!

Xx Items - A kiddo brought in some cereal boxes and we found the letter X on one of them!  We also found Xs on our shoes!

Circle Time - We made lots of Xs with our fingers and arms, legs and body!

Snack - Tasty Xs - Carrots and pretzels.  We even tried some silly Xs with apples and tomatoes.

X Family - We created our family from Xs!  The preschoolers loved this and carefully made each family member.  The 3 year old class - well, we were glad to get an X person made.  Ha!

Backyard Chalk City - Complete with dinosaur attack!

Arggh!  It be pirate day!  Shiver me timbers!

Xx Clothing - Holy cow!  A kiddo found a shirt with an X on it!  Great job!

Pirate Gear - Don't we look nice and piratey?!

Spy Glass - Super quick and easy:  tp roll, small plastic cup with bottom cut off and then just tape the cup on!

Class of Pirates - Arrgh!

Journal Time - A kiddo found an X with our scissors!

Free Play - Pirate Ship - The kiddos wrapped yarn around the overturned coffee table to complete the ship.  We also pulled out our big world map and post it notes.
The coffee table ship was kinda small, so we dumped out the dress up bin to create another ship.

A few kiddos just LOVED playing with and knotting the yarn.

Pirate Map - X Stamps - The kiddos needed a map while sailing the 7 seas.

Tissue Treasure Boxes - The kiddos decorated their treasure boxes with enthusiasm.  While they munched snack, I hurried outside to hide their boxes and mark their maps.

Their treasure box was just a tissue box wrapped with brown craft paper.  The extra bit of paper I cut off to become their map.

Here's the map!

Mini Treasure Chests - I figured the kiddos needed some jewels, so I pulled out crystal beads and these mini chests.  I found the mini chests at the party store, Zurchers.

Treasure Hunt - The kiddos were so fast I didn't get very many pictures!  They were excited to find that their treasure was tasty!  (Pirate Booty and Oreos)

Invitation to Play - Toddlers - We pushed around hunks of "snow" today.

Pirate Ship - Just a coffee cozy, a cup and a few masts.  Pretty fun.

Learning Station - Pirate Treasure Box

Our pirates used tongs to put "jewels" into the treasure boxes.

Learning Station - Spyglass Abc Hunt

The kiddos used their spyglasses to hunt for letters around the yard.  Once they found one, they ran it back to me, told me the letter and then headed off to hunt some more.

After we found all the letters, we put them in order to make sure we found them all.  Good thing we did too, because we had to go back on our hunt a couple of times to find a missing letter!

Pirate Day - Arrgh!!

Tuesday (September 19th) is "National Talk Like a Pirate Day"!  In celebration of that we had our pirate day today!

Arrgh! - Pirates - In Target's birthday party aisle, they have wonderful pirate eye patches.  The kids love them and they are durable and inexpensive enough to send each kiddo home with one.

Pirate Circle Time - This was a bit silly!  The kiddos squished into our pirate "ship" to do our circle time.  Ahoy matey!

Journal Time - Oh no!  Pirates stole our journals!!!  Fortunately they left us each a map to follow...

We found our journals in some crazy places!  Silly pirates!

Free Play - Ms. Sara made a pirate play mat, complete with an island to bury treasure on and sharks to evade!  Eeek!

I want to add a bit more to it.  Maybe a school of fish or a sea turtle.  Another smaller island and maybe some seashells... it's a work in progress.  I've also got to figure out the palm trees.
These poor pirates were doomed!

Treasure Boxes - The kiddos decorated their boxes in preparation for our treasure hunt. (Just a Dial soap box)

Snack - Pancake Time - We were going to make pancakes on Friday, but the power went out.  So we made them today.  We made purple pancakes!!
We made some eye patch sized, some with chocolate chips in them and some just normal.

Walk The Plank - Arrgh!  Watch out for the sharks!

Treasure Hunt - I took the kiddos on a hunt all around the backyard.  And we found it!  The treasure chest!
They were so excited!

Inside they found gold and goldfish!

Binoculars - I did binoculars instead of  spy glasses this year because I had a plethora of tp rolls saved up through the summer.  Ha!

Toddlers - Treasure Hunt - In plain sight, ha!  But they were pretty excited to find their GOLDfish!

Science - Exploding Treasure Chests -
Ok, more like fizzing.  But still super cool!  Ms. Sara made baking soda ice cubes (with jewels frozen inside).  The kiddos used eye droppers and vinegar to free their pirate treasure!

We had a bucket to clean off the jewels before we put them in our treasure box.

This cutie pie was DONE with the pipette and vinegar.  He was trying a new method.  Ha!

This fabulous idea came from these blogs: Here! and also Here!
