First Week - Germs and Fire Safety

Welcome our new preschool year!

Science - Glitter Germs - We talked about how germs are invisible to our eyes, but they are there.  To show this I put lotion on the kiddos hands, then sprinkled them with glitter "germs".  We talked about covering our cough in our elbow, down our shirt or in a tissue so our hands don't become germ-y.  We then took our glittered/germ-y hands to our toys and tables...

Washing Germs - Washing the glitter off takes a bit of time, which was also good to talk about washing well.

Cover Your Cough -

Journals - The kiddos created a fire in their journal with tape.

Science - Fire - We talked about what a fire needs (air and fuel), we also talked about what to do if fire gets on you (stop, drop and roll).  We did our first class fire drill.  And then we tried some fire science.
We know a fire needs air, so we put a glass over our candle to see what would happen ... the fire went out!  We also squirted out the flame on a candle and blew it out too.

"Toasted" Marshmallows - We used our fancy, felt, safe fire to "roast" marshmallows.  Yum!

Put out the fire! - The kiddos worked at firefighters again to put out the "flames" (shaving cream) on our toy house.

Outdoor Learning Station - Abc Fire

The kiddos needed to put out the "fire" on each of the letters.  They told me the name (and sometimes the sound) of each letter as they worked.

1st Day Back - Germs and Fire Safety

Hello!  Welcome to Preschool 2017-18!

Paint Chalk! - So fun! Found these on clearance at Michel's.  Wahoo!  Lots of fun and vibrant colors.
Look!  A baby rolley-polley!

Journal Time - Today we drew a self portrait....

Science - Germs! - We had a sneeze fest (with squirt bottles)...  We chatted about germs in our bodies and how when we are sick we don't want to share them.  When we cough and sneeze we need to cover it with our arm or down our shirt.  So of course the kiddos wanted to "sneeze" on themselves with the squirt bottle too!

Science - Glitter Germs - Next we lotion-ed up our hands and I sprinkled an ample supply of "germs" on them.  Then I set them loose to touch things in the preschool...... yes, we have glitter everywhere now.  Ha!
On tables ...
 ... walls, toys ...
 ... Ms. Sara!

Washing - Germs (like glitter) take a bit to wash off.  Soap, rubbing our hands together and probably some singing.

Fuzzy Germs - We decided to make ourselves a germ pet.  Ha!

It was a bit tricky cutting, but we got it.
We didn't bother with googly eyes, although that would have been cute too!

Backyard - Wahoo!
This kiddo was so very excited about this rock he dug up...

Fire Safety - Woah!  There was "fire" (shaving cream) on our toy house!  We squirted and squirted to put it out....

Then it spread to other toys!  Oh dear!

I saw this great idea on this blog:  Here!

Fire Drill - The first drill of the school year.  We chatted about procedure:  when we hear the alarm, quickly line up.  Then we go together up the stairs, out the front door and meet by the big tree.  Then we'll call 911.

Window Fire Drill - Always the favorite!  We talked about the need for having more than one escape route.  And of course we practiced that one too!  Out the window and meet at the big tree!

Mini Fires - Ha!  I love these!  We created a mini fire today with sticks and pipe cleaners.
I got the great idea for these from this blog:  Here!

S'Mores - Once we created our fires, Estelle had the lovely idea of making s'mores!  She said, if we had a fire, we should have s'mores.  Ha!  I couldn't argue with that logic!  So we "roasted" s'mores.

Science - Fire - We talked about what a fire needs to grow (fuel and air) and then how we can put out a fire (water, take away the air, blow it out)...  Then we tried it!

We took away its air by putting a cup over it, we squirted it with water and then we blew it out.
See this blog: Here  for more information.

S'mores Again - These smart kids presented the same argument ... We had a few toasted marshmallows, mostly they were warmed by the candle light, then consumed.

First Week of Preschool - Germs and Fire Safety

Hello and welcome to our new school year!

Hand Painting - Apple - This is a two day project, here's the teaser...
The kiddos will add the face on the worm and the stem and leaf to the apple.

Hand Print Apple - Part 2 - With our apples all dry we added a leaf, stem and eyes on our worm.

Science Experiment #1 - Germ Scatter -  We started out by talking about germ and how they are inside of us, especially when we're sick.  So when we cough or sneeze, those germs come flying out.  I "sneezed" on them with a squirt bottle...eww!

Next we talked about keeping each other safe from our germs by covering our coughs and sneezes (with a tissue, down the shirt or in the elbow).  We also talked about washing our hands.

Now to our experiment.  Germs are too small for us to see, so we used pepper to be germs and we watched what happens when you add soap.  Each kiddo added a few shakes of pepper...  Hint:  If you try this at home, you'll want less pepper.
You can see that the pepper floating on top scattered immediately when we added the soap.  Even the pepper on the bottom of the bowl scootched away from the soap.  Pretty cool!

Science Experiment #2 - Glitter Germs - For this one we pretended glitter were our germs.  Ms. Sara gave everyone a bit of lotion and then "sneezed" glitter on everyone's hands.  Yuck!
Next we touched each other, our toys, shelves, tables, walls, light switches....  Ah!  Glitter germs everywhere!
Time to wash those pesky germs off!  Glitter takes a bit of washing to get off, so it was perfect to talk about how long to wash (sing the Abcs or Happy birthday while you scrub).

Backyard - This is my favorite addition to the backyard this year.  We got a new swing set, so we took the slide off the old set and sunk it in the hill.  So awesome!

 Always happy in the mud...
I saved this little water table from a trash bin!  Wahoo!

Dirty Hands Clean Hands - We needed some mud for our art project so the kiddos made some and gleefully spread it on the "dirty" hands.  Then we "washed" our hands with bubbly soap (bingo paint dabber and glitter - have to have glitter).

Shape Fire Trucks - Toddlers -

Abc Fire Spray - The kiddos helped me write fire letters on the driveway, then they ran around and put them out!  In theory they were to tell me what the letter was they were spraying, but we got too excited and skipped that.  Ha.

Fire Drill - The preschool is to have monthly fire drills.  Today we utilized both fire exits.  Out the front door, and our more favorite:  out the window!

Science of Fire - We talked about how fire needs air (oxygen) and fuel to burn.  What if we take away the air?  We put a cup over one candle and it snuffed out after a few moments.  Then we used water to put out the next flame.  Our last candle we let run out of fuel (wax).  The kiddos each got a chance to place the glass and squirt the flame.  We also talked about match and candle safety, that only adults could light them.

Stop, Drop, and Roll - We also talked about what to do if fire got on their clothes.  The kiddos suggested that we could use water to put it out or a blanket.  Yes!  I also told them about "stop, drop, and roll"...

Glowing Fire - We decided to make our own safe fire with a battery tealight, tissue paper and a plastic cup.Once our fires were done, we turned off the lights and shut the curtains and lit our fires.  Then we roasted marshmallows!

I saw this cute idea on this blog:  Here.
