Learning Station - Pipe Cleaner Addition

The kiddos got to try out our new adding sticks.  (Just wait, they'll soon become subtracting sticks too.)  They scootch the number of beads for the first numeral to the far left, next they scootch the number of beads for the second numeral.  Then they count the total number of beads on the left and write the total on their paper.  Smart kiddos!

The beads really worked great!  Each kiddos was successful in adding because it was all right there!  I was at the table to assist, and to take a peek and make sure they had the correct number of beads.

Learning Station - Hero Adding Books - Preschoolers

The kiddos picked two numbers they would like to add together, we wrote them, then they figured out the sum.  We wrote that, then they put that many superhero stickers on.

I used lunch sacks, cut the bottoms off, folded, stapled.  Then cut cardstock squares to fit inside.  I saw this idea at:  this source.

A kiddo adding.  Her first two numbers she chose added up to 14:
"That's a lot!  Next I'm gonna do 1 + 1.  That's only 2!"

"1 + 2 is 3!"

"Yeah, but 8 is bigger than 3." 

"Yep."

Learning Station - Paint Dot Addition

The kiddos tried out some addition today and did just great at it!  Using bingo dot painters, the kiddos put the correct number of dots above the numeral, then added (counted) up all the dots and put the total number of dots!  Super cool.

Learning Station - Math with Shapes

Today we were working on tessellations (a pattern of shapes that fit together with no gaps or overlaps).  I cut squares, rectangles and triangles for the kiddos to use to create their tessellation.

Learning Station - Egg Carton Pattern Making

The kiddos followed the pattern maps.  Sometimes the maps had blanks and the kiddos had to finish the pattern.  Sometimes the maps just gave a color or shape and other times the map told the whole pattern to match.  I worked with the kiddos to make sure they were understanding the concept of pattern making and to check them on their colors and shapes. 

 

Learning Station - Sized Dinosaur Bones

The kiddos needed to put the bones in size order.  I worked with each kiddo as they did it.  We talked about size and bigger or smaller.  They had to compare some bones side by side to see which was bigger.  Good pre-math skills.

 I made the bones from a simple dough:
1 cup salt
1 cup flour
~ 1 cup water

Learning Station - Pattern Making

For our learning station today the kiddos created their own patterns with shapes.

I punched the shapes from scrapbooking scraps.  We worked on patterns with shapes, but we also could have easily done patterns with colors as well.

St. Patty's - Pot 'O Gold Counting Book

For our learning station today, the kiddos got to put together a counting book.

 I had the number cards out to help the kiddo remember how to write the number.  They used a white crayon to write the number on the black pot, then the glued the correct number of gold coins.  I made their books tall and skinny so the pot could be glued on the bottom of the page and the coins above it.

 For my three I did less pages and I numbered the pots for them. 

St. Patty's - Graphing with Lucky Charms Cereal

I printed out a simple graph for the kiddos to use with Lucky Charms cereal.  My fours had to graph both the marshmallows and the cereal bits before they could start snacking.  My threes, I had them just graph the marshmallows.  A yummy learning station activity.
