Summer Camp - A bit of messy fun!

For our final day of summer camp, I decided to do a few messy activities that I've been eyeballing...

Jello Finger Paint - A most delicious art activity!  The kiddo's licked more than they painted, but that was half the fun!

I got this tasty idea from this blog.

Nature Journal - I made these little books for each of the kiddos.  I chose sparkly paper instead of something more naturey because I had some and who doesn't love a little sparkle.  The kiddos enjoyed finding nature bits to tape into their journals.  I let them use my less favorite rolls of wasbi tape.

Foot Painting - I love these kinds of messy activities.  Some of the kids were hesitant others just jumped right in.  Ha.  It's always great to get a bit of paint between your toes!

Summer Camp - Boats!

Today we enjoyed making a couple of boats and trying a few experiments.  Here's what we did...

Walnut Boats - These turned out pretty cool.  I made them from the walnuts in our backyard.  First I tried melted wax, as a blog suggested, but we found hot glue was so much easier and faster.  Also I used a matchstick for the mast (striker end down) and wasbi tape for the sail.

Blue Ice - I froze some ice cubes and colored them blue.  Confession:  They were going to be these cute ice cube boats, but I totally forgot to stick the toothpick mast in them when they were half frozen.  Ha!  So instead, we just floated them around the pool and changed the water color in our buckets.

Paper Plate Ocean, and a Boat - I just found this idea on pinterest - so darn cute!  The rocking paper plate is the ocean.

Sink and Float - I had the kiddos gather items from around the yard to see what would sink or float.  We made a prediction (a thinking guess) and then tossed the item into the pool...

Ant Lunch - After snack we discovered that our dropped crackers did not become bird food, rather they became ant food...

Tea Party - I love it when they pour and pour.  The kiddo pouring today, she filled the cups up as quickly as I could dig them out of the bin of toys.

Mud Fun - I was wondering how many days it would take the kiddos until they started making mud.  Interestingly - both groups made mud today.

Summer Camp - Bubbles!

Today we enjoyed a very sudsy day with bubbles!

Here are a few things we did... (I found many of these ideas on pinterest.  See my preschool board for specific links).

Bubble Shooters - I quickly made these shooters for each of the kiddos by wrapping duct tape around 6 or 8 straws.  They were pretty fun.

Bubble Wands - These were nice and easy.  I just twisted up some pipe cleaners and set out a bowl of beads for the kiddos to lace on.  We could have created different shapes to see what would work best, hmm perhaps next time.

Hand Crank Egg Beater - I dug in the back of my odds and ends drawer to find this.  The kiddos had fun with it today.  They whipped up a bubble froth, stirred colors, blew bubbles from it...

Bubble Snake - These are amazing.  I have seen them on a couple of different blogs.  They work really well.  Just need a sock or a towel, tape the the end of a cut off water bottle.  Dip the cloth end in and blow gently...

Body Bubbles - I poured bubble solution all over a table and encouraged the kiddos to run their hands and arms through it.  Once we were all soaped up, we began creating body bubbles.  (I don't have any pictures of this because my hands were soapy.)  It's really easy to blow a bubble through your fingers and catch it on your arm if your all soapy.  (Great for bath time too.)

Bubble Windows - Have you seen these?  They are pretty cool.  Just using straws and yarn, you create a small bubble window.  Dip your window into solution (in a closed state - straws together).  Then gently pull the straws apart and see your bubble window.  You can observe the colors and the way they move.  Also, by gently moving your arms up and down or spinning with your window, you can create fabulous big bubbles!

Milk Bubbles - This was the best snack!  After we ate our healthy stuff, we enjoyed milk and cookies.  Of course I encouraged the kids to blow bubbles in their milk.  We did talk about how this was a special thing, and only to be done at preschool because moms would not like it at home.  Ha!

Summer Camp - Ice!

Today we enjoyed learning with ice!  Here are a few of the things we did...

Shaving Cream with Dyed Ice - I sprayed the table with shaving cream and then set out dyed ice cubes.  As the kiddos pushed the ice around in the cream, the colors swirled and mixed.  Pretty cool.  And who doesn't love playing with shaving cream!

Water Color Painting on Ice - I was hoping the kiddos would go to town with the colors, but not these guys.  Ha!  They were more interested in dumping the ice in the pool (brrr!) instead.

Water Play - I dug through my cupboards and found a few more water toys to set out.

Frozen Pirates - I froze some of our pirates in some blocks of ice, and then challenged the kiddos to get them out.  I set out a shaker with salt and one with baking soda.

We found the ice worked best, and when you poured on a ton, you could hear the ice cracking.  A bit later in the morning, we put vinegar in our spray bottles and dumped baking soda on the pirate ice...

That sped up the process and soon our pirates were free!  Yahoo!

We also made homemade popsicles, which the kiddos (and I ) loved!

UV Beads - Have you guys seen these?  I love them.  They are a white-ish color when away from the sun, then as soon as you step into the sunlight, they burst with color!  We made necklaces with them.

Summer Camp - Water!

Today in summer camp we did all things water!

I set up stations in the backyard for the kiddos to explore and play.  It was a great day!

Alphabet Soup - The kiddos enjoyed stirring and adding "ingredients" to their soups.  We also did a bit of letter practice with names and sounds.  I had a pot with magnetic letters and one with foam letters.

Below:  We discovered that the foam letters, once they were full of water, they squished very well.  So we would say the name of the letter and then squish it!  Splashing water all over!

Tea Party - What kiddos can resist a small pitcher and a plethora of cups to fill.

Potions - I dyed several buckets of water with food coloring and let the kiddos mix and concoct to their hearts content.  I gathered several items from our play kitchen and for the last couple of months I have been saving all the plastic bottles.  It made for quite a bit of fun.

Here are some potions the kiddos created.  One would turn you into a frog another into a singing rainbow.  Quite creative.

Spray Bottles (Only $1 at Wal-Mart) - Of course you HAVE to have these...

For our craft we made waterproof finger puppets.  I believe I saw these on pinterest.

The younger kiddos, I helped them (if they wanted) by drawing on a smile.

The older kiddos enjoyed creating their own.
